Warning to antidepressant users as temperatures of heat waves reach 100 degrees

Can’t take the heat? Your drug may be guilty.

Doctors are warning that people taking certain antidepressants could be at risk of serious health problems, as temperatures increase in the triple digits.

They urge users to take additional precautions as Tri-State Swelters before it is too late.

“If you take certain antidepressants, you may risk developing heat intolerance and dehydration,” said Dr. Zachary Rubin, a pediatrician and immunologist in a recent Tiktok video.

Studies show that about 1 in 8 North adults -Americans take antidepressants. Research suggests that two main types can interfere in the way the body regulates the temperature.

The first group, selective serotonin collection inhibitors (SSRIS), includes drugs widely prescribed such as prozac (fluoxetine), zoloft (sertraline), lexapro (scitlapram), paxile (paroxetin) and cexa (citation).

The second group, the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAS), includes older medicines such as Elavil (amitryptilin), anapranil (clomipramine) and sillenor (doxepine).

Studies show that these medicines can increase the time of the internal body to 106 ° F or higher, while also throwing a key in the natural cooling system of the body.

“You can sweat excessively or you may not be able to sweat so much,” Rubin explained.

It is not a small problem: sweating is the main defense of the body against overheating. Without this, the possibilities of heat stroke, the failure of the organs and even the death increase substantially.

Research shows that SSRI and TCAs can also wrap with the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that helps regulate body temperature, thirst and blood pressure.

“When the hypothalamus cannot control the body temperature, someone can warm up,” Dr. David Tzall, a license psychologist, told Medical News.

This increase in heat sensitivity increases the possibilities of heat exhaustion, which has symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, muscle ramps, headaches and intense sweating, according to the Cleveland clinic.

On the left without checking, heat exhaustion can be quickly climbed in a heat stroke, the most dangerous form of heat -related diseases.

At this stage, the body may begin to close, triggering seizures, hot dry skin or severe sweating, loss of consciousness and serious brain problems, including confusion, erratic behavior and collapsed speech.

In extreme cases, heat stroke can cause disability or permanent death.

“If you start to feel a fast heart rate, start sweating excessively, develop nausea, dizziness, or leg ramps, seek immediately air conditioning and, if necessary, make someone call 911,” he told Health.com Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine doctor.

However, experts say that SSRI and TCAs are safe and effective, provided that patients know the risks and detect warning signs before things are dangerous.

Rubin recommends being hydrated, avoiding the direct sun and wearing loose and light clothes when temperatures increase.

“If you have trouble, secure -you are looking for help,” he said.

Warnings occur as a search of once in the century, take the east coast, with more than 150 million Americans who currently live under “extreme” heat alerts.

Every summer, more than 500 neoyorcan people die prematurely from hot weather, a figure that has been climbing in recent years.

“This week’s heat wave could be deadly and threatening life if you are not ready,” Mayor Eric Adams warned a recent public security alert.
